Taipei(の)Poetry is a solo exhibition by Megumi Fukuda of new works made in Taipei.
Within an old house that still stands on Treasure Hill is a pair of Chair People, a sculptural work of chairs and objects that emerges from Fukuda’s Each Day Begins with the Sunrising and Ends with the Sunsetting series. Each Chair People is an assemblage of various daily commodities collected by the artist in the city of Taipei, integrated with electrical appliances that gently influence the other. An electric fan causes bells to tinkle, whilst the light of a lamp illuminates another. A series of mutual workings operated entirely by energy from the light that shines brightly onto Treasure Hill. Alluding to the notion of a couple, the smallest unit of a family, this scenery of cause and effect recalls the dynamics of a duo and the relationship between two individuals. Inspired by the fantastical imagery of the word for railway platform, 月台 (literally, moon platform) in Taiwan, an installation comprising mainly photographs with drawings and objects, speaks to the wonder, miscomprehension, and bewilderment experienced by Fukuda in Taipei. A visual poetry of impressions, the installation gathers traces of the artist’s interactions with others within the city’s unique cultural landscape.
